Wilber M. Rapier, PhD, PA-C, CCP, is the new chairperson of the Department of Perfusion Technology.
Rapier is an outstanding educator, clinician and administrator. He has served on the faculty for the Department of Perfusion Technology at Rush since 2004. He holds a doctoral degree (PhD) in adult education from Iowa State University, a master's degree in Health Care Management from Webster University, a Bachelor of Arts from Park University in Health Care Management and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oklahoma in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies. Rapier holds a certificate in perfusion technology from the Milton Hershey Medical Center and is licensed in the State of Illinois as a perfusionist and physician assistant. Prior to coming to Rush, Rapier was an assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistants at the University of Detroit - Mercy. In his role as a physician assistant, Rapier served as a chief medical officer to active duty combat battalions in the United States Army. As an Army PA, Rapier achieved the rank of captain while on active duty.
In recognition of his expertise as a teacher, clinician, and leader, Rapier has received a number of honors and awards, including three awards for outstanding academic achievement from the Office of Minority Affairs at Iowa State University and military awards for meritorious service and exceptional service in combat units. Rapier has given a number of presentations related to his profession and is active in supervising master's degree perfusion students' research projects.
