The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at Rush University is now offering a combined program for a Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) Certificate and Masters of Science in Clinical Laboratory Management. This integrated curriculum prepares students for the SBB Certificate and for the Diplomat in Laboratory Management (DLM) exam given by the ASCP Board of Certification.
The SBB/MS combined program offers graduate level courses to help students achieve their career goals by providing comprehensive instruction in blood group serology, transfusion medicine, and laboratory management. The SBB/MS combined curriculum will consist of lectures, discussions and clinical experience components. The goal of this unique program is to prepare students to assume positions in administration, management/supervision, clinical research, or teaching in a hospital, blood center, university, governmental agency, or any health care related industry.
Denise Harmening, PhD, MT (ASCP) has recently joined the Rush University faculty to facilitate the continued development of the SBB Certificate and Masters in Clinical Laboratory Management program. Harmening is an educator, administrator, researcher and well-known author. In 2001 and 2003 she was named one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” by the Daily Record in recognition for her contributions to communities in the state of Maryland.
“We are excited about the collaboration of these two programs. The educational component has been designed to provide an extensive contribution to the professional education in Immunohematology. The curriculum will provide advancement in leadership and a pathway for collaboration and partnership with Transfusion Services, while offering a professional experience,” said Harmening.
Applications are now being accepted for fall 2010 enrollment. The SBB/MS curriculum is a two year program that allows students to complete the SBB certificate program in four quarters, including a summer quarter. The Masters degree in Clinical Laboratory Management includes four additional quarters of course work. A part-time option is available.
